What is a moot court and why should you take part in one? That is the question you might be asking yourself and that is the reason why this website was set up.
This site does not substitute or complement the official Roman law moot court website nor does it give any content related information. For official information please visit https://www.irlm.law.cam.ac.uk/
We want to give you a good idea of what the requirements are to participate for the University of Vienna, how a moot court works, how much time you need to invest and what the benefits are.

Participating in this year’s International Roman Law Moot Court in Oxford was an unforgettable experience. It offered a rare opportunity to step beyond the lecture hall. Representing our university, we not only sharpened our oral advocacy and legal thinking but also embraced the challenge of stepping into roles we rarely get to play in everyday academic life.
Throughout the week we also explored Oxford and its charming colleges. Most importantly, the Moot Court became a space for connection —
I can now count my teammates among my friends and also made new connections with students from across Europe.
It was a rare chance to practice speaking skills and take on a role that brings legal studies to life in a completely new way.

It has truly been an honor to participate in the International Roman Law Moot Court and I will forever cherish the knowledge I gained and the beautiful experiences that I made not only while in Oxford, but also in preparation for our final performances.
I would like to thank Professor Gamauf and Professor Scheibelreiter who supervised the moot court, along with the entire Roman Law Institut as well as former participants of the moot court, who played a guiding role. Special thanks goes to all the other Professors and fellows involved in the International Roman Law Moot Court, without who such a great event could have never taken place. Lastly, I want to thank my teammates who displayed their wisdom and also showed me much kindness. They truly made this experience so special!

The moot court is a rare opportunity. For me it was an open window into a world very different to mine. Not only in the way that I got to submerse myself into another legal system, but also in how there was a plethora of people willing to share something with and educate me about their native lands with it’s associated legal culture and norms. I think I went away a richer man than I was before. No coins or gold were the treasure that I took back with me but a wealth of human connection and some no less valuable experience in the ways of the world.

As mooting is rooted in common law traditions, it places strong emphasis on persuasive oral argumentation and advocacy skills. I found developing these skills to be very enriching.
I also took pleasure in gaining a deeper understanding of the systematic and comprehensive nature of Roman law.
This year’s moot court in Oxford was a truly memorable experience, not only thanks to the breathtaking setting, but also because of the exceptionally kind and engaging international participants.

The part of the XVII International Roman Law Moot Court Competition that I enjoyed the most was the possibility to exchange opinions and interpretations about the facts we all had studied for a certain amount of time, above all because you could perceive the differences in the cultural and juridical backgrounds of the participants. Simply thrilling and amazing as an experience.

The IRLM was a wonderful experience. I expanded my legal knowledge and speaking skills while having fun and making new friends!

The International Roman Law moot court competition was a huge challenge for me! It’s allowed me to improve my English and oratory skills. Furthermore, it’s a beautiful human experience. I am very grateful to have taken part of this incredible law adventure!

In the IRLM I had the incredible opportunity to deepen my interests in Roman law in an international setting, gain an unforgettable experience and learn rhetorical skills for the future!

I consider myself very lucky to have participated in the 17th IRLMC, because it was undeniably an amazing experience! We all learned so much during the competition and we met very interesting people from many different countries. We also got the chance to visit and experience the beautiful city of Vienna!

The IRLMC has been the best part of my final years as a student as it was a great intellectual challenge and wonderful social experience. I have met many wonderful students from all around Europe whom I am sure I will never forget!

Participating in the 17th IRLMC was undeniably one of the best experiences of my studies so far! Being able to expand knowledge and apply the tools and theory we all have acquired while studying the law, as well as meeting amazing new people made this journey unforgettable.

This was my last semester studying law at the University of Trier and I am glad to have gone through the effort and participated.
The pleadings were exciting, the city was the most gorgeous I had ever seen in my life and the food was delicious.
However most importantly, I met many great people from across Europe, who study the same thing I study. It was truly a special event and I could not have asked for a better ending to very challenging studies.

It was a great experience for me. Although it was a lot of work, there was always something to laugh about. I was lucky to have a very nice team of colleagues. But not only the time with my team colleagues was nice; during the competition I had the chance to talk to many other team members and have great fun. I practiced my legal English and how to speak in front of judges. I wouldn’t want to have miss the experience. I’m glad I had the opportunity to participate.

It was a great experience! I had the opportunity to improve my English and oratory skills, I had to challenge myself by talking in front of the judges and other teams. I also travelled abroad, saw a beautiful city, met beautiful people and had fun with them!

The IRLMC was an incredible experience, both professionally and on a human level. It was challenging but it allowed me to develop lots of new skills. Moreover, I was able to meet new people, both those on my team and those from other teams. I’m so glad I was able to take part in this experience !

Taking part in the 17th IRLM was a wonderful experience, partly because it gave me the (rare) opportunity to study and moot in Roman Law, but far more importantly because I ended up meeting so many amazing people and spending five days basically on holiday in Vienna. It was the most fun I’d had in a long time!

Taking part in the IRLM 2024 in Vienna was an amazing experience and I can only recommend it.
